“After Yang” selected at the Cannes Film Festival

Good news! Kogonada’s drama-sci-fi ‘After Yang‘ will debut in Un Certain Regard at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

[…] Rounding out the main cast of characters is mysterious Ada, bleached-blonde and Kohl-eyed. First seen sneaking around Jake’s empty house when the family is out, Ada also appears in some of Yang’s stored memories, a cipher. She has a connection to Yang that’s best left for audiences to discover.
For this pivotal role, a Kogonada addition to the short story, he had only one actor in mind: Haley Lu Richardson, the magnetic young actress who was a co-lead in Columbus and had key supporting turns in The Edge of Seventeen and Split.
“His vibe is purely creative, collaborative and peaceful,” says Richardson. “I literally love him and I want to be in anything he ever makes.”

“Haley Lu means so much to me” says the director, grateful for their collaboration. “I have a lot of trust in her. I put Columbus on her shoulders, and she carried it with such grace and determination. There was no place to hide in that film, not a lot of plot or coverage. She had to be present at all times, and she was more than that. Haley Lu attunes you to the moment and to unspoken layers of emotion.”

Richardson admits to becoming obsessed with the idea of playing Ada, taking cues from the script but also the makeup and hairstyling. “I was really transformed by those departments, which helped me find Ada even more,” she says. “She has a desperation to find herself as her own person.”

She also has come to appreciate the rarity of an artist like Kogonada. “I knew about the concept of ‘less is more’ but I didn’t understand fully how that correlates with acting and moviemaking until Columbus,” Richardson says.
“He just completely opened my mind to how much more powerful it can be when you use restraint and get people thinking about things instead of forcing a bunch of answers down their throat.” […]

Rob Delaney, Sally Phillips and Jameela Jamil have also joined ‘The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight,’ starring Haley Lu Richardson.

Romance feature The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight has rounded out its cast with Ben Hardy set to play the romantic lead opposite Haley Lu Richardson.

The movie, which will be produced by To All the Boys shingle ACE Entertainment, takes place over a 24-hour period and follows Hadley (Richardson) and Oliver (Hardy), who begin to fall for each other on their flight from New York to London. But, as the logline reads, “is it misfortune or fate that separates them when they land? The probability of ever finding each other again seems impossible, but love — and London — may have a way of defying the odds.”

Catastrophe star Rob Delaney has also joined the cast as Hadley’s father, who moved to London after his divorce. Bohemian Rhapsody director Dexter Fletcher will play Val, Oliver’s eccentric Shakespeare-loving father, and Bridget Jones’s Diary’s Sally Phillips will play Oliver’s mom. The Good Place’s Jameela Jamil will act as the story’s narrator.

Katie Lovejoy, who worked with ACE on To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean, penned the screenplay, which is based on a book of the same name by Jennifer E. Smith. (ACE is now in post on an adaption of another novel by Smith,  Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between.)

Vanessa Caswill, who was behind PBS’ Little Women miniseries, is directing the feature, which is currently in production in London.

Matt Kaplan will produce via ACE. Max Siemers, Matthew Janzen and Aubrey Bendix will oversee the project for ACE.

Scott McGehee & David Siegel Quietly Shot Drama ‘Montana Story’ Through Pandemic

Scott McGehee and David Siegel (What Maisie Knew, The Deep End) just wrapped production this week on Montana Story after six weeks of shooting their script in and around the Paradise Valley south of Livingston, MT.

Montana Story follows two estranged siblings, played by Haley Lu Richardson (Unpregnant, Five Feet Apart and the upcoming After Yang) and Owen Teague (The Stand, Mrs. Fletcher), as they return home to the sprawling ranch they once knew and loved. Against a Western landscape both mythical and uncertain, they’re forced to confront a bitter family legacy and forge a new path forward. The fates of their ailing, unscrupulous father and a beloved old horse hang in the balance.

Film also stars Kimberly Guerrero (The Glorias) and Eugene Brave Rock (Wonder Woman).

Siegel and McGehee wrote, directed and produced, along with producing partner Jennifer Roth (Black Swan, Mudbound). Pic was shot on 35mm anamorphic film by Giles Nuttgens (Hell or High Water, Enola Holmes) and designed by Kelly McGehee (American Honey, The Affair), both longtime collaborators of the directing duo. Filling out the creative team are costume designer Catherine George (Okja, Snowpiercer) and editor Isaac Hagy (Waves, Atlanta).

Montana Story was filmed under a low-budget SAG and DGA contract, following all the necessary Covid-19 protocols.

Siegel and McGehee are represented by ICM Partners. Richardson is represented by Gersh, 3 Arts and Sloane Offer; Teague is represented by CAA, manager Nils Larsen at Integral Artists and attorney Steve Younger at Myman Greenspan.

Haley Lu Richardson and the filmmakers behind the To All the Boys franchise are teaming for a feature adaptation of The Statistical Probability of Love At First Sight.

Matt Kaplan and his ACE Entertainment banner will produce the feature, which is set to shoot in London. Along with starring, Richardson is set to executive produce.

Richardson, repped by Gersh, 3 Arts and Sloane Offer. can currently be seen in UnPregnant, the first original feature for HBO Max, and recently wrapped production on Kogonada’s After Yang, starring opposite Colin Farrell.. Her other feature credits include Support the Girls, CBS Films’ Five Feet Apart and Julian Fellowes’ The Chaperone.

The coming-of-age project will be the inaugural effort from film producer Greg Berlanti’s deal with HBO Max.

Five Feet Apart star Haley Lu Richardson and Euphoria breakout Barbie Ferreira are going on a road trip.

The two actresses have signed on to star in UNpregnant, one of the first features being made by HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service.

Greg Berlanti is producing with partner Sarah Schechter, with the project being the first movie under his HBO Max film pact and massive overall deal with Warners. Erik Feig, who recently launched PictureStart, is also producing with the company’s Lucy Kitada and Jessica Switch.

Based on the YA novel of the same name, UNpregnant is a coming-of-age story that focuses on a Missouri teen who hits the highway with a friend to obtain a legal abortion. Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan wrote the book as well as the script.

A fall shoot in New Mexico is being readied, with the plan to have the feature in the can, so to speak, for the launch of HBO Max in 2020. Rachel Lee Goldenberg is directing. Berlanti Productions’ Michael McGrath will exec produce.

“When the opportunity to produce a film based on UNpregnant arose in partnership with the incomparable Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Erik Feig, I knew HBO Max was the right place for this story,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, said Thursday in a statement. “We want to create authentic, relevant films that are told with grace and humor to serve our young adult audience, and this is exactly that.”

The 24-year-old Richardson has steadily added to her acting résumé over the past five years, working with notable directors like M. Night Shyamalan and appearing in such movies as Split, The Edge of Seventeen and Operation Finale. This year, she toplined, along with Cole Sprouse, the teen drama Five Feet Apart and shot After Yang, a sci-fi drama opposite Colin Farrell which A24 will release in 2020. Richardson is repped by Gersh, 3 Arts Entertainment and Sloane Offer.

Relative newcomer Ferreira is a model who built a major fan base on Instagram and made her acting debut on Sam Levinson’s splashy HBO series Euphoria as high schooler Kat Hernandez, breaking out alongside fellow newcomers like Hunter Schafer. She is repped by Aperture Talent Agency, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Felker Toczek.
